About the Freemium Container Tracking Solution

Why is Container Tracking important?

Container tracking is crucial for businesses involved in shipping and logistics. It ensures visibility and transparency throughout the supply chain, allowing companies to monitor the movement of goods in real time.

By utilizing container tracking solutions, businesses can optimize inventory management, enhance operational efficiency, and minimize the risk of delays or loss. This technology enables timely delivery, improves customer satisfaction, and fosters trust between stakeholders. With the increasing global trade volume, efficient container tracking becomes indispensable for businesses seeking to stay competitive in the market.

How does Container Tracking work?

Container tracking relies on various technologies such as GPS, RFID, and IoT devices to monitor the location and status of shipping containers throughout their journey. GPS technology allows for precise location tracking, while RFID tags or sensors provide additional data such as temperature, humidity, and motion.

Here’s a simplified breakdown of how container tracking works :

  • Installation of Tracking Devices
  • Data Transmission: These tracking devices continuously collect data about the container’s location, condition, and other relevant parameters. This data is transmitted via cellular networks, satellite communication, or other wireless technologies to a central monitoring system.
  • Central Monitoring System: The transmitted data is received and processed by a central monitoring system
  • Real-time Monitoring: Stakeholders can access real-time information about the container’s location, route, estimated arrival time, and condition.
  • Alerts and Notifications: The tracking system can be configured to send alerts and notifications in case of any deviations from the planned route, delays, or incidents such as temperature fluctuations or unauthorized container openings.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: The collected data can be analyzed to identify patterns, optimize routes, improve efficiency, and enhance supply chain visibility.

Why should you use Container Tracking?

Container tracking ensures visibility, efficiency, and customer satisfaction in supply chain management. It mitigates risks, enables data-driven decisions, and enhances operational performance, keeping businesses competitive.

Is container tracking free?
Yes, basic container tracking is free on SafeCube. You can track containers across 180+ carriers (Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, ONE, Cosco and 175 more) directly from this page. Free signup gives you 100 shipments, no credit card required. Paid plans add unlimited tracking, real-time email and Slack alerts, API access and team collaboration features for logistics teams scaling up.
How do I track a container by container number?
Paste the container number (4 letters + 7 digits, e.g. MSCU1234567) into the SafeCube search bar above. We resolve the carrier automatically and pull the latest position, vessel, last and next port, ETA and any exception alerts. No need to know which shipping line owns the container  SafeCube identifies it from the BIC code prefix.
Can I track a container with a Bill of Lading (BL) or booking reference?
Yes. SafeCube accepts container numbers, Bill of Lading (BL) numbers and booking references — paste any of them and we resolve the rest. This is useful before the BL is released (booking ref works) or when you have the BL but not the individual container numbers (SafeCube returns all containers associated with that BL).
What information does SafeCube show for each container?
For every tracked container you get: current position (on vessel, at port, at terminal), the vessel name and its IMO number, last reported port, next port (destination), estimated time of arrival (ETA), any status changes since pickup, and exception alerts (vessel change, ETA shift greater than 24h, customs hold). Full voyage history is available with a free SafeCube account.
How accurate is real-time container tracking?
Container positions are updated as carriers and ports report milestone events — typically within minutes of an event happening (gate-in, loaded, discharged, gate-out). ETA accuracy depends on the source: carrier-reported ETAs are usually within 24 hours, while SafeCube's predictive ETA (which factors in current ocean conditions and destination port congestion) improves accuracy by an average of 30–40 % vs static carrier estimates.
Why does my container show "no data" or "not found"?
Three common reasons: (1) the container number was mistyped — check the format is 4 letters + 7 digits, and that the check digit is correct; (2) the shipment is too recent and the carrier hasn't published the first milestone yet (allow 12–24 hours from booking); (3) the carrier is not in SafeCube's 180+ network — rare, but check the carrier coverage page. If none of these apply, the container may have been delivered and archived by the carrier.
Can I track multiple containers at once?
Yes. With a free SafeCube account you can paste up to 100 container numbers in one go and track them all from a single dashboard, with sortable columns (status, ETA, carrier, exception). Paid plans remove the 100-shipment cap, add CSV bulk import, API access for system integration, and team collaboration features (shared shipment views, role-based permissions, comments).
How does container tracking integrate with my TMS or ERP?
SafeCube exposes a REST API and webhooks: pull container statuses on demand, or receive push notifications the moment a milestone is reached, an ETA shifts or an exception fires. Standard payloads cover position, vessel, ports, ETAs and milestone history. Documentation includes a Postman collection and a Swagger spec, and the API is available on all paid plans.
